The Hardoy Chair was developed in 1938 in an architectural office in Buenos Aires. Because of its shape, the chair is also known as the Butterfly Chair.

The term BKF Chair, which is also often encountered, is composed of the first letters of the names of the three architects involved in the design, Antonio Bonet (1913-1975), Juan Kurchan (1913-1975) and Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy (1914-1977). Bonet and Kurchan later acknowledged Ferrari-Hardoy as the actual author of the chair.
